 Workshops

Key stage 1

Our Key Stage 1 workshop introduces young learners to the exciting world of photography, focusing on fundamental concepts like light, angles, and the use of colour. The session kicks off with an engaging 20-minute presentation, where students will explore the basics of photography through interactive questions and discussions.

After the presentation, it’s time for hands-on learning! Each child will be invited to bring a teddy from home to be the star of their photoshoot. Working in small groups, they’ll apply what they’ve just learned to capture their own creative images, experimenting with light, perspective, and composition. This fun, practical session encourages teamwork and allows students to see photography in action while building their confidence behind the lens.

Key stage 2

Our Key Stage 2 workshop goes slightly more in depth into the core concepts of photography, introducing the pupils to shutter speed, aperture and composition. This session also kicks off with an engaging 20-minute presentation, where students will explore the basics of photography through interactive questions and discussions.

Application

Each workshop is designed as a standalone 45-minute session in order to cover both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 in a single school day. Whether as part of an exciting Art Week or integrated into a wider creative topic, these sessions offer a unique opportunity for students to explore a new form of creative expression. They allow pupils to tell their own stories through the lens of a camera, using photography as a powerful tool to share their perspective and imagination.

For a deeper, more immersive experience, the workshop can also be extended over a term or run as an after school club, aligning with your curriculum in areas like IT or Art. The extended program takes pupils into a deeper knowledge and understanding of topics such as:

- Shutter speed

- Aperture

- Depth of field

- Composition

- Rule of thirds and more.

It is wonderful to see the children come alive as they create through photography; I've watched those that have often struggled in the school environment completely engage with the activity and produce some amazing images! Another rewarding aspects of these workshops is how they often spark further creativity across the curriculum. Teachers can go on to use the photos taken during the sessions to inspire creative writing, storytelling, and other projects, bringing photography into various aspects of students’ learning. A school we recently worked with created a gallery showcasing the photos taken during the photography workshop as part of their Art Week, allowing students to come together and view each other's work, which they were all very excited about!

Photography is a medium that affects so much of our lives. It helps us connect with the world, to experience places we've never been. It opens a door to our heritage and family members we may never have met before. It is instrumental in making memories and reliving them. These workshops are an opportunity for children to explore the world through their lens.

A bit about me...

Hello! My name is Shanice Keenan, a proud mum of two young boys and a professional photographer with over 12 years of experience. Alongside my photography career, I’ve also spent time working as a teaching assistant in primary schools across Hertfordshire. My time working with children has helped me develop the ability to communicate my craft in ways that resonate with young minds, ensuring they get the most from every session.

I feel truly privileged to combine these two aspects of my life, using photography to inspire creativity in a way that is both meaningful and life giving.
